Age of Majority

Age of Majority

Do you know  the Legal “Age of Majority” in New York?

I always thought that the age of emancipation (Age of Majority) in NYS was 18. And it is in fact 18 years of age when a person ceases to be a minor. Meaning that at 18 a young person can vote, be drafted, legally enter into a contract etc. At 18 years of age a parent has no access to their child’s medical insurance claims covered under their policy. Also, at 18 a person will be tried as an adult.

HOWEVER – Financially – at 18 the young person’s parent is still held responsible for their child and the actions of their child until the child reaches the age of 21 years of age. Wow – Now why is that?
